The following statement will seem like it makes no sense, but stay with me so that I can explain it:

To understand godly love we must first have godly fear.

One of the most famous phrases in the bible is “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10 and other places). Like many things that the bible claims, this brings immediate anger and resistance to the unbelieving mind. How can God be loving if He wants us to fear Him? Some believers today have even bought into this understanding, following in the footsteps of the early gnostic heresies that claimed the God of the Old Testament is a different God than the one revealed in the New Testament.
