“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.”

—Isaiah 55:1-3

As human beings we all have certain emotional and spiritual needs that must be fulfilled. We long for spiritual experiences, satisfying connections, love, a sense of purpose, a sense of importance and a sense of usefulness to others. We strive to create predictability in our lives so that we can have more peace of mind, and we also have the need for excitement, discovery and newness. All of these drives and desires are gifts from God, yet they are gifts designed to be fulfilled exclusively in our relationship with Him. Only Christ can satisfy the human heart because He is the One who designed it.

They make grandiose plans long in advance, they put their hopes in political candidates and political outcomes and they look to money for peace of mind instead of looking to scripture or prayer.

I am completely guilty of all of these things too, so I’m not judging, and I’m glad that God humbled me so that I could see the truth: that He is enough for my life.
