Throughout the bible we are told that the greatest commandment is to love God with everything we’ve got. Jesus said that loving God and loving our neighbor as ourselves constitutes the entirety of the moral code given to mankind, and yet these two things — which seem so simple — are the absolute most difficult things to do in life because they are completely contradictory to our very nature.

Scripture says that our hearts are desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9), to not lean on our understanding (Proverbs 3:5), that nobody seeks after God (Romans 3:10–17), that the god of this age (Satan) has blinded the minds of people (2 Corinthians 4:4) and that even our good deeds are like filthy rags when they are not grounded in a relationship with God (Isaiah 64:6). All of this testifies to mankind’s inability to initiate a relationship with God and why God, in His boundless mercy and love, makes the first move to resurrect us from spiritual death through His pouring out of grace in our lives.
