I think it comes down to that word everybody hates 'submit'? Or too many Chiefs and not enough indians, comes to mind. Nobody ever said you don't make choices. The issue is can you choose free of all influence? No, because that would mean choosing free of God's influence.

The distinction you're looking for is primary and secondary causes, remote and immediate causes. Not influence and control, because those don't label what's happening correctly.

There are many biblical authors who speak of us us having choices. Perhaps you could say in His sovereignty God gives us freedom to choose
